ADAS Calibration stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These are a range of automated safety features on a vehicle designed to enhance driver safety. These include functions such as collision warning, emergancy braking, lane keep assist, speed, just as examples. If any functions monitored by your vehicles’ ADAS seem not to be performed, then you will either get a driver alert, or the ADAS will take action on the drivers behalf.
You may have heard of functions such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warnings, Road Sign Detection, Adaptive Headlights, Blind Spot Warnings and many more. As technology grows, so does the list of functions that ADAS covers.
ADAS Calibration involves precisely aligning and testing a variety of cameras and sensors that collect data to inform the vehicles advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). ADAS systems will require recalibration after a collision, or sometimes after specific vehicle repairs have been carried out. This is to ensure that the systems continue to operate effectively, and safely.
Here at Dack, we have the experience and ADAS equipment to calibrate your ADAS systems. There are different types of ADAS calibration: Static and Dynamic. Get in touch to find out which we recommend for your vehicle.
Static ADAS calibration is where the vast majority of vehicles will begin calibration. This requires specialist equipment and will take place in a controlled environment, whilst the vehicle is stationary.
Many vehicles will require both static and then dynamic calibration, and some only dynamic calibration. This adjusts calibration as the vehicle is being driven: Dynamic ADAS calibration involves driving the car in varying conditions to allow the system to collect data and adjust accordingly – including specific speeds and driving conditions.
How Often Should ADAS Be Calibrated?
ADAS calibration is generally not needed on a regular basis unless the vehicle undergoes repairs or replacements affecting the ADAS components. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations and guidelines.
How Can I Tell If My Vehicle's ADAS Needs Calibration?
There are a few potential indicators that your ADAS might need calibration. These can include:
· Error messages or warning lights related to ADAS on the dashboard.
· Unusual behaviour of ADAS functions, such as false alarms or failure to activate when required.
· Recent repairs or replacements affecting the vehicle’s structure or sensors.
What are the risks if my vehicle is not calibrated properly?
Similarly to the above, if your vehicle is not calibrated correctly, there are risks involved. These can include:
· An increased risk of accidents
· Incorrect alerts or warnings
· Failure to detect hazards outside the vehicle
